On September 29, 2023, Future Motion Inc. recalled all models of their nationally distributed “Onewheel Electric Skateboard” after discovering a crash hazard that causes serious personal injuries and death.

Why was it Recalled?

Future Motion Inc. of Santa Cruz, California recalled approximately 300,000 one-wheel self-balancing electric skateboards. Those boards are designed to automatically balance the rider depending on their weight distribution on the board. The self-balancing feature of the board can malfunction and stop working if the weight limits of the board are exceeded or if the battery is low. This can cause the rider to lose their balance and control of the board resulting in serious personal injury.

After receiving many incident reports of serious rider injuries including traumatic brain injury, concussion, paralysis, upper and lower body fractures and four reported deaths between 2019 and 2021, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Future Motion Inc. recalled the device. Onewheel Electric Skateboards were sold online at www.onewheel.com and other websites and independent stores nationwide from January 2014 to September 2023 for $1,050 through $2,200.
