April vacation is here and whether your week involves fun in the sun at a tropical destination, an exciting road trip, or just day excursions to a local park or attractions, it is important to think about keeping your family safe before you hit the road.  Here are key points to keep in mind.

On The Road Safety

Road trips are a popular vacation choice for families during school break. They can be extremely memorable experiences, but there are risks to consider when driving long distances in unfamiliar territory. Before you leave, be sure to do a maintenance check on your vehicle. Experiencing car trouble on the highway or in a new place can be dangerous to you, your family and those sharing the road. If you have items that need to be strapped down, or physically hang from the vehicle, make sure they are fully secured. If debris falls from your vehicle causing an accident and injuries, you can be held liable for the damages. Leave the phone off or let your passengers handle the phone. Not only is texting or talking on the phone a serious road hazard, it is illegal in most states in the U.S.

Amusement Park Safety

Amusement park trips are often popular during April vacation. Rollercoasters are exciting but also can be quite dangerous due to defective equipment, malfunctions, improper operation and lack of enforced rules. Be sure your family members follow ride instructions and specifications to prevent avoidable incidents. Many amusement parks also have waterparks with wave pools and waterslides, which pose additional risks. Following safety procedures and not venturing beyond one’s limits is the best way to stay safe while having fun. Do not assume that lifeguards are watching your children all the time even though they are paid to do so. Although amusement parks are required to perform routine maintenance and inspections, don’t hesitate to ask the park management when the latest inspection was done for their equipment. If something does not look safe to you, don’t take the risk.

April vacation is the perfect time to bond with the family. The weather is improving and there are plenty of things to do to give everyone in your family a break from their everyday routine. Whatever activities you choose, be aware of your surroundings and follow safety procedures to help avoid mishaps. If you happen to be involved in an accident, be sure to take action immediately and call an expert who can inform you of your options.
