On October 6, 2021, a construction worker tragically died while working on a project site in East Boston. This is one of several recent construction site accidents resulting in serious injuries or death to workers. The worker plunged, falling six floors down a stairwell shaft. Plans filed with the Boston Planning and Development Agency indicate the project is a 42-unit, seven-story residential building to be devoted to low-income elderly housing. Neighborhood residents say East Boston is inundated with construction projects.

The Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety & Health wrote in a statement, “The death of an unnamed construction worker in East Boston is a tragic reminder of how dangerous the construction industry can be and that employers must take every precaution to protect workers from numerous hazards on the job, especially falls”.

Both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Boston Police Department are investigating the incident and hopefully they will be able to determine how this accident occurred and what can be done to prevent it in the future.
