Paul R. Sugarman receives MATA 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award

Boston—Paul R. Sugarman, founder and principal at Sugarman and Sugarman, P.C., has received the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys (MATA). The award, presented at MATA’s annual dinner on May 14, 2007, recognizes individuals whose careers have encompassed not only extraordinary professional accomplishment but also exemplary commitment to serving their clients, their colleagues, and the community at large.
In remarks delivered at the awards ceremony, Sheila Sweeney, MATA’s Director of Development and Public Relations, wrote, “ A mentor to all who have been privileged to know him, Paul R. Sugarman is a brilliant trial attorney who continues to leave his own indelible imprint on the practice of law.... His belief in the law, his dedication to his clients, and his outstanding legal skills brought him to the forefront of the legal profession at an early age, where he continues to build a legacy that few can hope to achieve.”
Paul Sugarman has specialized in civil trial and appellate litigation throughout his distinguished 50-year career, and has served as President of the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Lawyers, and as Chairman of the Board of Bar Overseers. In 1990 the Supreme Judicial Court appointed him to investigate alleged improprieties in the Boston Municipal Court. In addition, he served four years as Dean and Professor of Law at Suffolk University Law School.
A prolific writer and lecturer, Paul Sugarman is a recognized mediator and has more than 25 reported appellate decisions to his name. He has represented clients in Massachusetts’ most complex, high-profile litigation, and was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers, and as an Advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He has received numerous awards, including an honorary Doctorate of Laws from Suffolk University.
Sugarman, established in 1967, is the largest personal injury law firm in Massachusetts. Recognized for its leadership in law, advocacy, and education, the firm handles a range of civil litigation, including medical malpractice, premises and product liability, construction site accidents, fire and explosion litigation, and motor vehicle accidents. Many of the firm’s cases have established important legal precedents at the appellate level.
