Sugarman & Sugarman, P.C.
One Beacon Street
Boston, Massachusetts 02108

Throughout the course of a legal career approaching 15 years, Stephen Sugarman has prided himself on pursuing and litigating complex personal injury cases, many of which require painstaking investigation before a lawsuit is filed or even contemplated.  In addition to his trial and arbitration practice, Stephen's determined approach to his clients and their families has resulted in some of the firm's most significant settlements over the past decade.

His practice concentrates in the areas of medical malpractice, defective consumer products, car accidents, construction site accidents, explosion and fire cases, and general liability cases.  Stephen is past co-chair of the Tort Law Committee of the Boston Bar Association and is a member of numerous bar organizations where he has served on civil litigation, trial and administration of justice committees.  Stephen also regularly lectures at Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) and other education programs.

Stephen joined SUGARMAN as an associate in 1999 and became a principal in 2007.

Currently, Stephen and SUGARMAN partner Benjamin Zimmermann are investigating and pursuing claims on behalf of patients who were fitted with defective DePuy, Stryker and other metal-on-metal artificial hips.  For more information about these claims, please click here.

Selected Cases

School bus crash, Settlement in a negligence and product liability case against a transportation company and bus manufacturer following the deaths of four middle school students on a school trip in Canada.  Through the use of accident reconstructions, SUGARMAN attorneys established that bus driver error was the cause of the deadly crash, and not a roadway design defect as the defendants maintained.  SUGARMAN lawyers also prosecuted product liability claims against the foreign bus manufacturer, relying upon biomechanical engineering evidence to show that an improper window design resulted in passengers being ejected from the bus during the crash sequence.

Industrial plant explosion, Settlement against a Springfield company and a chemical manufacturer following a resin-powder explosion that caused the death of three foundry workers and seriously burned and maimed nine others. In reviewing tens-of-thousands of documents and conducting scores of depositions, SUGARMAN lawyers uncovered the defendant company's corporate orders to reduce and eliminate safety programs at the foundry in order to increase production and profits. These reductions caused an explosion hazard which the defendant knew was a danger to the injured and deceased employees.

Defective aerial lift control design, Settlement reached for an electrical apprentice working on the Big Dig.  The worker suffered an abdominal crush injury and an esophageal tear because of a malfunction with the bucket controls.

Union tunnel worker injured on job, Settlement for a worker who was injured when an auger hooked piece of rebar struck the worker in his leg, causing a tibial plateau fracture.  The settlement was reached with the auger operator's employer.

Obstetrical malpractice by doctor and nurse midwife, Settlement for the death of baby shortly after birth. The doctor negligently used Pitocin during labor and left the mother in the care of a midwife.

Bicyclist struck in intersection crosswalk by ambulance, The bicyclist sustained severe and permanent injuries to his ankle and heel when an ambulance ran him over. The ambulance was not responding to an emergency and was driving toward an intersection within the speed limit. The driver claimed that it reached the intersection before the bicyclist and that the cyclist rode into the ambulance’s path. Through eyewitnesses and an expert witness’ reconstruction of the accident, SUGARMAN attorneys were able to disprove the driver’s defenses and demonstrate the bicyclist was within the confines of the crosswalk before the ambulance reached the intersection, thus proving the defendants’ negligence.

Negligence during shoulder surgery, Settlement for a 26-year-old man who underwent surgery to treat a shoulder dislocation and suffered a brachial plexus injury as a result of the surgery that caused arm paralysis.
