BOSTON – Yesterday, Attorney General Martha Coakley presented the second annual Legal Food Frenzy Cup to law firm Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P., the defending champions who also won the Cup in 2010. Staff at Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. collected the equivalent of, in food and funds, 730 pounds of food per capita and raised the equivalent of nearly 22,500 pounds of food overall. Attorney General Coakley also announced that the Massachusetts legal community raised the equivalent of, in funds and food, over 377,000 pounds of food during the two-week Legal Food Frenzy, a benevolent competition to raise food and funds to benefit the four Massachusetts food banks. The food and funds raised during the drive will provide over 290,000 meals to people in need.
“The dedication and generosity of the legal community in this friendly competition will provide over 290,000 meals to hungry residents who are struggling to put food on the table,” said Attorney General Coakley. “Congratulations to Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. for winning the Legal Food Frenzy Cup again this year and thank you to all the other participants for joining us in this competition. We are delighted that we were able to expand this effort statewide and look forward to working with the Massachusetts food banks, bar associations and the legal community in the coming years to continue our mission of fighting hunger in the Commonwealth.”
Over 60 legal organizations from eight counties across the state were recruited to participate in this competition. The participants collected food items and donations from Monday, March 28, 2011 to Friday, April 8, 2011—a traditionally slow time for donations. While the first annual Legal Food Frenzy was piloted in the Greater Boston area and benefitted only The Greater Boston Food Bank, the Legal Food Frenzy was expanded in 2011 to benefit all four Massachusetts Food Banks—The Greater Boston Food Bank, Merrimack Valley Food Bank, Worcester County Food Bank, and The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts. These four Food Banks serve more than 800 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters that help feed hungry families across the Commonwealth.
